　　该歌曲由艾薇儿与The Matrix制作团队创作 ，歌曲的创作时间只用了一晚上。在写完歌曲后，The Matrix就发现这首歌的歌词并不吸引人，于是就回到工作室里重写了这首歌曲 ，而这首歌曲的名字正是取自歌曲中的一句歌词：“为什么你要把事情搞得这么复杂?”。当艾薇团队负责人之一的Josh Sarubin听到这首歌后，他就把歌曲介绍给l.a reid听，l.a reid在听完后，开始全力支持艾薇儿与The Matrix合作歌曲，并强烈要求把这首歌作为专辑的首单发行 。而艾薇儿则在采访时表示，她创作《Complicated》并不是为了特别描写某一个人，而是想要表达生活中的一些“两面派朋友”和虚伪的人际关系 。
