Stars rise from the east
FINALLY, the wait is over. Much to the excitement of fans, South Korean boy band Dong Bang Shin Ki released their new album, Mirotic, on September 29. Once again, the five boys have displayed their appeal (吸引力) with powerful beats (节拍) and memorable tunes (曲调).
The title of the leading song, Mirotic, comes from the Korean word "miro" which means "maze" (迷宫) and the English suffix (后缀) "tic". "It is meant to describe the kind of feeling one has when he falls in love with someone at first sight," said member U-Know (郑允浩). "It's like being trapped in a maze."
It is reported that the album has sold 90,000 copies two days after its release. It has risen to No 1 on the weekly chart in South Korea.
While you enjoy the catchy song, don't miss the band's trademark dancing moves. This time Dong Bang Shin Ki worked with famous dance choreographer (舞蹈编排) Kenny Wormald, who once cooperated with American pop stars including Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.
The band began working on the new record in early 2007 and didn't finish until June this year. "We have plunged (投入) ourselves into the producing work. We see the album as an opportunity to show our fans that we have made progress on a daily basis," said member Xiah (金俊秀). "We won't let them down."
It is this aspiring (有抱负的) attitude that keeps the band going in the highly competitive entertainment world. u The band never sets boundaries (边界) to their music styles. Since their 2003 debut (首次登台), they have tried pop, R&B and ballads (民歌). After winning the hearts of thousands of teenagers across Asia, they haven't slow down. This year, Dong Bang Shin Ki has starred in two TV dramas, Dating on Earth and Heaven's Postal Delivery Man. The boys are sure to ride the wave of South Korean pop culture.

Changing habits
SONG Yinan, 16, used to hate drinking milk for breakfast. But the Taiyuan girl began drinking it because her mom, as well as many others, said that milk was good for her growing body. Besides, milk and bread made up a convenient (方便的) diet that helped save her parents a lot of time after Song entered junior high and had to arrive at school early in the morning. Hence (从此), Mengniu and Yili became her favorite brands (牌子) of morning milk and yoghurt after dinner.
However, she has been forced to change her diet since the recent milk crisis (危机). Many best-selling home milk brands such as Mengniu, Yili and Bright were discovered to contain melamine (三聚氰胺), which is usually used to make plastic (塑料). The bad milk products have sickened more than 53,000 babies and killed four.
“I shifted (转向) to rice porridge,” she said. “My mom has to get up at 5:50 am to prepare my breakfast and make sure that it cools down when I get up.”
Song has become addicted (上瘾的) to milk, so she doesn’t quite enjoy her morning meal these days although she knows that it’s a tiring job for her working mom.
“I’ll turn back to Mengniu and Yili when they finally improve their products,” she said.
However, right now Song’s mom tries to adjust (调整) her eating habits by cooking different foods. Besides rice porridge, noodles, egg drop soup and soybean milk are prepared to diversify (使多样化) her breakfast.
“I’m considering buying a soybean grinder (豆浆机), but the prices of soybean grinders are scaling up (攀升) these days,” complained her mother.
Beijing student Huang Shuang’s family has a grinder, and soybean milk has become a regular (通常的) recipe in the family during the weekends. From Monday to Friday, the 16-year-old has given up drinking Mengniu for Sanyuan, the only big brand that passed the quality test two weeks ago. The milk crisis has also warned her to develop a cautious (谨慎的) habit when shopping for food.
“I have started to pay attention to when and where my purchases (所购商品) were made,” Huang said.

Future has arrived
HAS English football finally found a new star? A few days ago, 19-year-old Theo Walcott came onto the scene by scoring a hat-trick (帽子戏法) for England in a 4-1 victory over Croatia.
Walcott’s lightning (闪电) speed and accurate (准确的) shooting have turned the teenager into an overnight (一夜成名的) star. Many think he is a new dawn for the England team.
It was symbolic (象征意义的) that Walcott's goals came from the right-wing (右侧). The position had been played by "golden boy" David Beckham for more than 10 years.
No longer were the cheers for Beckham. The fans' hopes now rested on the shoulders of Walcott.
The teenager's rise to fame (成名) has not been completely out of the blue. He was part of England's World Cup team in 2006, but he did not get to play a match. He has also spent over two years at Arsenal, where he is fast becoming a key player.
But few were expecting the wonderful performance on September 10. The teenager was the first England player to score three goals in a game since Michael Owen did so seven years ago.
Although England is full of superstars, they have a poor record in major tournaments (比赛). But things are beginning to change. The win against Croatia was sweet revenge (复仇). Croatia was the team which knocked England out of Euro 2008.
England fans begin to hope for World Cup victory in South Africa in 2010. England has not lifted the trophy (奖杯) since 1966.
But before England fans get too carried away, they must remember that placing a country's hopes on one teenager is dangerous.
Walcott's club manager, Arsene Wen ger, warned (警告) that the 19-year-old cannot be expected to shine in every game.
Still, with less than two years until the World Cup, England's fans are starting to dream.
