　　Back where she belongs

　　LIFE is a tough road full of ups and downs. Everyone has to experience the low times. But Elva Hsiao, 29, has her own way of dealing with the downturns.

　　"If you handle them positively, you can change them into turning points in your life and have new breakthroughs," says the pop singer from Taiwan.

　　She announced her new partnership with the EMI music company in Beijing on April 22. Her new album is going to come out in June, and she will also have a role in two movies.

　　At 19, Elva's talent was discovered when she joined a singing competition in Vancouver, Canada. To develop her singing career, she gave up her fashion education and came back to Taiwan. It proved to be a success. Her energetic dance music with its strong rhythm and her trendy (流行的) hip-hop looks made her a hit in the record industry.

　　Despite looking glamorous on stage, Elva has actually undergone lots of "low times".

　　They first started when she came back from her one-year vacation in 2005 and found others had stolen the spotlight. She hoped to fight back by joining the Warner music company. However, her new record got delayed due to the company's internal affairs. She had to wait for three years until it got released in late 2006.

　　"To change my mood, I went to the US to learn more hip-hop dancing skills," she said.

　　When everything seemed to be falling back in place, she accidentally hurt her foot while dancing in her music video. It became her most helpless period. "Even my mom suggested I quit," she said, "But I wanted to carry on."

　　She now recommends How Did I Get Here? Finding Your Way to Renewed Hope and Happiness When Life and Love Take Unexpected Turns written by the American author Barbara De Angelis. The book has inspired her a great deal.

　　"The book tells me that when pessimistic people encounter setbacks (挫折), it will make them sad," Elva says, "For optimistic people, they treat them as a turning point and another door for them in life."
