The best big man
NBA player Dwight Howard wants to be Superman for more than just one day out of the year.
Howard is the talented Orlando Magic center who put on a red cape and an "S" on his shirt while winning the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk Competition. But he doesn't want to be just the NBA's best big man — he wants to be the best player, with improved maturity and court awareness.
He's only 22, but Howard is already the Magic's leader. At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Howard fought to defend American basketball's honor, although he was more of a role player than a superstar on the American team. But that has only fueled his hunger: "Got a gold medal now. Time to win a championship."
Magic's point guard Jameer Nelson said: "He has come back a lot more mature and he's holding us all to a higher standard now."
Howard also wears specially-designed shoes with a Superman logo and is the most dominant player on court – he looks for ways to dunk nearly every time he can. "I know that is my bread and butter... can't get away from that," Howard explained.
On February 14, Howard will defend his dunk crown at the 2009 Slam Dunk competition to be held on NBA All-Star Night.
In fact, his towering height and skills have caused people to compare him to a young Shaq. Shaquille O'Neal once said that when he retired, it would be the end of power players in the NBA. He pointed out that players like Yao Ming and Dirk Nowitzki use skills more than strength.
But people say Howard proves this is not the case. "I think Dwight is more of an old style center like Shaq. He loves to grab rebounds (篮板球) and play aggressively," said former Magic player Grant Hill.
Although Howard may play like Shaq, he doesn't act like him. Shaq has a loud personality and loves media attention. Howard, on the other hand, has a gentle personality. He was raised in a conservative family and doesn't use bad language.
He participated in several NBA "Read to Achieve" assemblies (集会), which encourage children to make reading a priority.

Singing along
IF boy wizard (巫师) Harry Potter uses his magic to capture (迷住) the hearts of millions of teenagers, high school students Gabriella and Troy have charmed American boys and girls with their stories of campus life.
They are the leading characters in High School Musical, a series of hugely successful films in the US. The sequel (续集), High School Musical 3, came out on October 24 and has topped the American box office for two straight weeks.
The show has everything attractive to teenagers – dancing, catchy (悦耳的) music, puppy love and good looks. The story starts when high school basketball star Troy and brainy Gabriella – two teenagers who are worlds apart – meet during the winter break. At a karaoke contest they discover their love for singing and an interest in each other. When school starts, Troy finds out that Gabriella is the new girl at his school.
Eager (渴望) to find the magic they had during karaoke, Troy and Gabriella decide to audition (试镜) for the school’s upcoming musical. This angers the school’s drama queen Sharpay. However, they overcome difficulties and become the lead actors.
But the story doesn't end there. High School Musical 2 follows their adventures over summer vacation when Sharpay tries to break up Troy and Gabriella. In the latest sequel, high school seniors are facing the possibilities of being separated from each other as they go off in different directions when graduating from high school.
Joined by the rest of their friends, Troy and Gabriella stage a musical reflecting (反映) their experiences, hopes and fears about the future.
"The success of the High School Musical films shows Disney's long-term efforts to attract youngsters for whom Mickey Mouse seems too babyish," wrote New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff. "For the time being, the movie has made fictional high school students as recognizable as that 79-year-old mouse."
