  Opening young minds

IF we pretend that our lives have no pain, can we really make it go away? The answer looks to be no. Actually, trying to hide the problems only makes things worse.

Perhaps that's why writer Rao Xueman loves touching upon sensitive (敏感的) topics, such as young love in her novels. Her works include Left Ear (《左耳》) and Sandglass (《沙漏》), which are tragic stories about teenagers.

Her latest work Sandglass III came out this month. It is written about a girl named Jiang Lan who goes to Beijing to find her fortune. She meets a mysterious boy, who distracts (分散注意力) her from her dreams.

"I hope teenagers are alarmed by how dear the price can be if something goes wrong, so they can learn to cherish (珍惜) their lives," she says. "I hope teenagers will be more tolerant (宽容的) in life, otherwise they'll eventually hurt themselves."

At first, Rao preferred to write campus stories that were cheerful and light-hearted. However, one day a reader who suffered from depression (消沉) came into her life. The troubled girl told Rao about her sad stories and the two became intimate (亲密的) friends. However, the girl later committed suicide (自杀). This shocked Rao and she no longer wanted to get away from heavy and harsh topics.

She gets very close to her readers and knows a lot about them. She told Teens that she often goes to school to meet them face-to-face. She also chats with her readers on QQ, and they trust her and open up their hearts to her. In return Rao protects their privacy and tries her best to give them advice.

Rao says that, as life gets more comfortable, today's teenagers get more tender and sensitive and their feelings are often exaggerated (夸张的). So she hopes her readers can find an outlet (发泄处) to the negative feelings through reading her novels. But for her, what the youths need most is an open mindset and to take things easy.

  Can Capello succeed?

ITALIANS have contributed a great deal to English culture. They introduced pizza, coffee, central heating and stone roads to the country. Now England is turning to Italy to help restore (恢复) its football pride.

The Italian Fabio Capello has been appointed as the new England football manager. The 61-year-old replaces (替代) Steve McClaren, who was fired as the team's manager last month after England failed to qualify (取得资格) for the European Championships.

If England's previous managers were quiet and reserved (内敛的), Capello is the complete opposite. He is well known for his fiery (暴躁的) personality and is often seen yelling (叫嚷) at his players.

When one Italian journalist was asked to describe Capello, he said: "You want to know about Fabio Capello's human side? Well, that's easy. He doesn't have one." So if England's players decide to disobey him, then they can expect to be heavily punished.

"I am very proud to be the England manager. It's a dream come true," Capello said. "But like with all dreams, I hope I don't have a bad awakening (梦醒)."

One of the problems Capello has to face is to work out why England's gifted footballers failed to make it to the European Championships. Despite having world-class individual (单独的) players, they do not play well together as a team.

Capello's abilities are not in question. He has won nine league titles in 16 seasons with four different teams. His aggressive (攻击性的) approach to management has worked for him before. Now English people hope that it will work for their team, too.
