Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, and he was also the only United States president to hold a patent (专利).
Lincoln was born on February 12,1809. As a young man, he had a strong interest in new technology. He once worked on the Mississippi River as a boat worker. One day, the boat rushed onto a dam (水坝) and was set free only after a long time. In later years, while traveling on the Great Lakes, Lincoln's ship met similar trouble. These two similar experiences led him to think about his invention. Abraham Lincoln received a patent on May 22,1849. The invention was used to help out the boats or ships that met trouble in shallow water or beach. But it was never on the market. Abraham Lincoln made the model for his patent with his own hands out of wood. It is on display at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History.
In 1858, Abraham Lincoln called the introduction of patent laws “one of the three most important developments in the world's history”, along with the discovery of America and the perfection of printing.

“It is a model to solve the problem of left-behind children,” said Liu Wenkui, secretary of the foundation. The “substitute mothers” will do parents’ job, finding out what the children need and helping them with problems. Each substitute mother will take care of about 300 to 500 children. There will be a “children's home” in each village to be the mother's office and children's playing space. Their job is to provide quick service and discover the children's problems.
The program hopes to hire women aged 19 to 55 years old from the villages. “We want to hire full-time ‘mothers’ to make sure they won't think about other work,” Liu said. “We want local women because they understand local languages and cultures.” The program in Sichuan is an experiment, and Liu said, “If it is a successful model, we will start it in the whole country.”
“If parents are forced to leave home to earn a living and unable to take their children with them, we are looking for a transitional (过渡的) way to solve the problem,” he added.

We can express thoughts and feelings and send sounds and pictures on our smartphones today. We can't send tastes, smells or touch. But some scientists in Britain are trying to develop a way for smartphones to do that.
To give users a sense of taste, Adrian David Cheok and some other scientists designed two electrodes (电极片). “You put these two electrodes in your mouth, you put your tongue in between and then your tongue will get a virtual taste perception (虚拟味觉) in your brain,” said Professor Cheok. They have already created sour, salty, sweet and bitter tastes.
A device called “Scentee” permits users to have the sense of smell. Scientists put a Scentee into a smartphone, and it can spray (喷射) small clouds of fragrance, including flowers, fruits and coffee. Professor Cheok says the person speaking can activate (激活) the device. Scentee holds a container with about 100 different smells. The container must be replaced when all the smells run out.
The sense of touch comes from a ring-like device. It is connected wirelessly to the smartphone. “I can be in London and my friend can be in Tokyo, and I can squeeze my finger and then they'll get a squeeze on their finger through the Internet. It's a way of touch communication with small mobile devices,” Professor Cheok said.
Professor Cheok hopes devices like these will someday be added to houses. He says they may change the future of long-distance communication.

Many countries all over the world have National Parks. There are about 7,000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect natural settings as well as the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities.
Are there National Parks in England?
There are nine National Parks in England. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951. Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010.
Are there any problems in the National Parks?
First, there are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits to the areas but creating problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be swamped(使淹没) by visitors. This results in overcrowded car parks and roads choked with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops; in popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people making it hard for them to stay in the area.
Another major problem is litter. In the parks it is a particular danger to animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage large areas very quickly.
How can people help?
All National Parks in England promote the Countryside Code, which tells people how to take care of their environment. If these rules are followed, the National Parks will be protected and continue to give pleasure to many people for a long time.
73. What were the first three National Parks in England?
74. What two main problems do the National Parks in England have?
75. Do you think it necessary to protect the National Parks? Why or Why not?
