  Enjoy tap dancing

IF you think tapping (踢踏) your feet three times a second is difficult, how about doing it 600 times in a minute? It's almost impossible.

But for the tap dancers in Christmas Dancing Shoes, it's no problem. The show, by the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, is one of the best in the world. It ran from December 21-23 in Beijing.

In the two hour-long show, the cast (演员) showed off four different styles of tap dancing. And in a variety of settings. There was dancing in the classroom with desks and chairs, dancing on railway station platforms (站台), even mom and dad dancing in the living room!

As with other kinds of dance, there's a right way and wrong way to do it. But each dancer adds his or her own personal take on things. It's this that makes it so appealing (吸引人的) to young people.

"Dancing is so relaxed," says dancer Doerr Mary, 15, a high school girl from Texas. "You can move around just as you like."

Every other week she flies to North Carolina just to train. "I've been tap dancing since I was two and half years old," she says. "I've found I just can't stop dancing. Even when I'm sitting down, I'm tapping. My mom sometimes gets angry," she laughs. Mary says she finds tap dancing is a good way of expressing herself. It's like, she says, "talking to my feet."

Mary says tap dancing has changed her life. She used to be shy, but not any more. "Knowing that I can dance in front of such a large group of people is a real confidence-booster (信心增强剂)."

  Jay just won't stop

IT seems that everything about pop king Jay Chou is considered "cool". The way that he speaks unclearly, the way he practices the two-fold sticks (双截棍), and the way he plays the piano in that retroverted way (反手).

Now, he's displaying another type of coolness – the basketball moves he displays in his latest film Kungfu Dunk (《功夫灌篮》). It will hit cinemas on Spring Festival Eve, February 6. He says that he cares more about showing his moves rather than scoring points.

In the film, he plays an orphan (孤儿) expelled (开除) from a kungfu school. By chance, he gets admitted into a university basketball team. With his kungfu skills, he excels at slam-dunking (扣篮).

Jay enjoys challenging himself and he had to learn new techniques for the film. In one scene, he had to use his feet to hang on to the hoop (篮球框). In another, he had to stand on top of the hoop.

"I hope to challenge Yao Ming in person," he said. "I'm shorter than him but I'm more flexible (灵活的)."

More attention to films doesn't mean he will give up music.

He has released his latest album Jay Chou on the Run (《我很忙》) in November. The title song Cowboy is Busy carries a touch of old rural America. He tries Western country music, and takes on the appearance of a tough cowboy with a strong sense of justice (正义).

"People said my music is conservative (保守的), so I made a song with a brand new (全新) style. But I still have my own accent (口音)," he said.
