Don't smoke, even secondhand
EVERYONE knows smoking is bad for you. And by now you've probably heard that breathing (吸) in someone else's secondhand smoke also harms (损害) your health.
Beijing recently expanded (扩大) its smoking ban (禁令) to all forms of public transportation, including subway, buses and taxis, in order to protect people from the harm of secondhand smoke.
Secondhand smoke comes from both the smoke that smokers breathe out and the smoke floating (飘浮) from the end of the cigarette. It may seem pretty harmless, but secondhand smoke actually contains thousands of harmful chemicals (化学物质). Many of them have been proved to be poisonous and cause cancer (癌症). In fact, secondhand smoke greatly increases a person's danger of:
● respiratory (呼吸的) infections (传染病)
● asthma (哮喘) (secondhand smoke may lead to the development of asthma and can trigger attacks)(发作) in those who already have it● coughing, sore throats (喉咙), sneezing
● cancer
● heart disease
So secondhand smoke doesn't just affect (影响) a person in the future. It can cause problems right now. According to the new rule, if you find a taxi driver smoking in the car, you will be given a reward, but many people would rather find no one smoking!
