Earth's last legend
It is a New York you've never seen before: Manhattan transforms (变成) into a true island, isolated (孤立的) and falling apart. Weeds grow on the streets. Times Square is deserted and the Empire State Building sits neglected. Looking around, you are the only person in the city, or maybe the world. What would you do?
It sounds a bit scary. But this is exactly what Robert Neville is facing in film, I am Legend (《我是传奇》). The movie opened in the US in late December. Now its DVD, released by Warner Brothers, arrives in China on April 3.
Neville, played by singer-turned-actor Will Smith, is a brilliant scientist. He is the last man standing in New York after a terrible virus becomes a worldwide plague (瘟疫). Almost everyone on the planet dies. Those who survive are mutated (变异) into monsters called the Infected. They only come out at night and will destroy or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has been trying to discover a cure for this disease and to find out if any other people might have also survived. He is not alone though. The Infected, hidden in the shadows, watch Neville's every move. Neville now tries to use his own immune (免疫的) blood to reverse (逆转) the effects of the virus. But he knows his blood is what The Infected hunt. He is outnumbered and runs out of time?
Will Neville save the world all by himself? You need to check your DVD shop and find out.

Division banned
AS a traditional strategy towards the college entrance examination, students are often grouped, at the beginning of their second year of high school, as either someone pursuing liberal arts (文科) or science. In recent years, the division (分科) in many schools appears as early as among Senior 1 students.
However, there are some changes for students in Shandong Province. Schools have banned dividing students in their first year. Moreover, those who will enter high school since this September will not be divided until the end of their second year.
"I disagree with the ban," said Jin Weijing, a Senior 2 student in Qingdao, who chose liberal arts as her focus when she was a Senior 1 student. "I prefer the division to be made as early as possible so that we can concentrate on either liberal arts or science courses."
As the college entrance examination (whether in the model 3+2, 3+X or the model 3+X+1) has been generally divided into science and liberal arts majors, a majority of students share the same opinion about the division as Jin.
"The ban seems impractical. We would have to work hard on all the nine subjects if there was no division. Even with the six subjects after the division, we feel exhausted," said 18-year-old Qi Fei in Shuozhou, Shanxi Province.
Qi chose science last year, which meant that he had no in-depth classes for one of his favorite subjects, geography.
"I hope one day the school system will be more flexible (灵活的) so that we're free to take some courses as we like. However, we're currently only offered the subjects related to our majors to be chosen as our electives."
Senior 1 Zuo Xiaojing in Yantai agrees.
"I dream of becoming a translator, so I will choose liberal arts. Although I prefer to take fewer courses, I may be limited in my knowledge of science, which might affect me being a good translator in the future," she said.
In spite of such worries, Zuo concedes (让步) to the pressure from the college entrance examination.
"If there are no changes to the examination system, I'm afraid we'd better stay with the division," Zuo said.
